Types of Local Art and Artists

New Orleans is filled with art ranging from street artists and performers, to historic sculptures and buildings to famous artists in art galleries. There is so much beauty to see and experience in this city!

Sculpture Art
Sculptures are everywhere in New Orleans and very eye catching!


“At Rest” by Jason Kimes

This art is a piece of Poydras street sculpture gallery. It is reminiscent of bottle cap art but classier. It is a steel manikin made out of silver dollar sized disks of steel. It is located on Poydras between Camp and Magazine Streets. This is a famous sculpture done James Kimes. 

Vivian Westerman 
She is an illustrator, painter, and sculptor. She has worked on Jackson Square for over 25 years. She is most famously kn0wn for her horse sculptures. You can find her art in the gallery called Fine Art America, located at 1611 Patterson Drive, New Orleans, Louisiana 70114.

Paper Mache
Paper Mache is used quiet often with The Carnival and Mardi gras. Many floats and accessories are made out of paper mache. It is an art that a lot of people probably don't first think of, but is profound in New Orleans. 




"Carnival Sculpture" by: Brian J. Bush and "Fleu de Lis"

This piece is made out of wood, cardboard and paper mache. It is located in the French Quarter in New Orleans. Brian Bush creates walking heads, carnival flowers, and sculptures for the Mardi Gras parades. He has always had a passion for the Carnival traditions. His art can be seen regularly at the Arts Market of New Orleans, as well as many local and regional festivals. His art is also on sale and display on Frenchmen St. and Miette on Magazine St.

Carol grew up in New orleans. She has skills in business, marketing, design and art. Her preferred mediums to create art with is pen, ink and watercolor. She is apart of many Louisiana Society's such as Louisiana Artists Association and Arts Council of New Orleans. 

Street Murals
One type or art that is portrayed all over in New Orleans are Street Murals and street art. These murals always depict something in particular about the city. A lot of the murals represent history such as Jazz Music, the African culture, the French, and they hold special meanings. Street are and Murals are so popular because it feels so real. Though illegal, people see it and know that some person put their thoughts and vulnerability out there for the world to see and it is beautiful.

"Project Be" by: Brandan Odums

Brandan Odums
Brandan speaks to underrepresented populations. He creates Murals and street art around the city of New Orleans to inspire change. Brandan created a series of graffiti murals depicting iconic African American civil rights leaders at the Hurricane Katrina damaged Florida Avenue public housing complex in New Orleans’ 9th Ward, in 2013. You can find one of his civil rights icons painted on the walls of an abandoned housing project in the Lower Ninth Ward. He uses the mythology and history of New Orleans to turn the parts that have been neglected or not as popular to beautiful areas of art that can be noticed.
