Brandan Odums
Brandan Odums also known as "B-Mike" is one of those less traditional painters known in New Orleans. B-Mike is a not only a painter, but an activists for the rights of African Americans. He studied art at New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. Early in his career his focus was in film making, he directed music videos and documentaries. In 2012 he started experimenting with spray paint and found his newest passion. He expresses his thoughts and helps to influence culture through his spray paint murals, depicting historical African American figures, every day people and abstract images.
He started a projected called Exhibit Be, which is an exhibit created on abandoned public housing, a four building with murals being five stories high. Over 40 different artists contributed to the mural, with the attempt to represent the presence of racism throughout New Orleans that has led to poverty and violence in the African American community. Other murals can be viewed throughout the city of New Orleans.
Mallory Page
A more traditional famous artist from New Orleans is Mallory Page. Her paintings are done on canvas and displayed in an art gallery. Mallory's original study in school was designs because she loved exploring the relationship between space and how it interacts with the things around it, and how we interact with it. This eventually led her down the path of painting and transitioned into her beautiful form of abstract. The abstract art she creates is extremely large in size and appears very simple. However, this simplicity is done intentionally, because even if they appear simple they consist of layers on top of layers of paint. This type of abstract arts is intended to help explore a persons perception of colors and how it changes through the use of light. Her work can be featured through her website https://mallorypage.com/about/ or at her newest studio on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain located 30 minutes from New Orleans.
Viktor
Viktor is a local painted we met while exploring Jackson Square. He is not local to New Orleans, he was born and raised in Russia. However, he has traveled around from a very early age in life painting local scenery and portraits of women along the way. He recently arrived in the US a few years ago first living in Chicago, IL, then Texas and arrived in New Orleans last year. His work is very simplistic with soft lines and subtle colors. It creates a feeling of relaxation and harmony when
viewing them. Viktor can usually be found painting daily in Jackson Square from early afternoon till about five PM. The prices of his art work all depend on size and if they are on canvas or canvas board, his larger canvas pieces cost $150. He will also paint portraits for $100 or $70 if he likes you, and they take around an hour to complete. If you can not find Viktor in Jackson Square you can visit Galerie Rue Royale which features a few of his paintings and is located at 541 Rue Royale New Orleans, LA 70130.
If you are looking for a variety of street paintings in New Orleans one of the best ways to do this is through a self guided tour through the city. It consists of a five mile trail that can be walked or biked and usually takes about three hours if walking. One of Brandan Odums most famous murals is located along the mapped routed out.
